PLAIDS

OK, let’s talk about another pattern you’re seeing now that cooler weather is finally here (kinda). Plaids have found their way into so many corners of the fashion world over time that it’s really just a matter of HOW designers will use them, not IF they will. Personally, I’m loving what I’m seeing right now and hopeful you’ll embrace some of the updated options out there for you this year.

When it comes to plaids, the first things I think of are a true mixture of styles. First, the iconic Burberry scarf (duh). Yep, even if you don’t own an authentic version of this classic statement piece, you’ve surely had one of the million knock-offs. Those things are sold everywhere from T.J. Maxx to China Town and everywhere in between. Second, don’t judge me for reminiscing those early fashionable days of punk princesses like Gwen Stefani and Avril Levine. I’ll admit to singing along to some Sk8er Boi and wearing my grommeted belts with buckles to the side and a t-shirt that said “I love boyz in eyeliner.” Shameful but true. Lastly, I think of a blue plaid men’s shirt I threw over my Old Navy overalls, a fitted tee, Birkenstocks, and a navy Polo ball cap in the late 90’s while walking across campus to Spanish Lit. I was literally known for this look. Totally ahead of my time, right?

Luckily, fashion has come a long way and this year I’m not ashamed at all to add these plaid goodies to my swoon list! First up is a blue and white large tile print wool and poly blend mid-length coat. It’s by Sezane, a French company you’ll want to learn more about because of their commitments to sustainability and ethically sourced textiles. You can read more about their current and future goals for continuing to better their processes here. This coat is gloriously oversized and goes from super casual to an eclectic piece for your more classic silhouettes. I need it like I need a full stock of red wines…which is life or death these days!

Next, I literally cannott get this long black and white deadstock number by Reformation out of my mind. Doesn’t that usually mean you should go back for it? I think that’s the rule (winky). Either way, this coat has all the attributes of long and classy to oversized and cozy which are basically my go too vibes for the fall and winter. It’s also made of a “deadstock” wool-poly blend fabric that brands like Reformation embrace. “Deadstock” textiles simply mean they are just that, deadstock, left over from other brands or fabric houses that companies purchase and use for their own designs. This is important because it helps to reduce the amount of garments and textiles filling landfills across the world. Not-so-fun fact: globally we produce 13 million tons of textile waste each year of which 95% could be reused or recycled. So yeah, really thankful for companies like Reformation.

Not interested in an oversized coat, check out some classic blazers, soft capes, or more fitted options like this trucker jacket or Old Navy peacoat.

COATS

Moving on from the obvious plaid options like outerwear, consider adding this trend to your bottom line (see what I did there?). From silky pleated midies to paper bag pants, I promise that ALL your favorite brands have some kind of plaid option for you this season. Pair any of them with a solid neutral color top at start and then walk into a moment while totally owning it! People will be see your boldness and be inspired by your confidence.

SKIRTS + PANTS

Last but certainly not least are plaid accessories. Just go ahead and add all of these to your Christmas wishlist, I have! These are all fun and super easy ways to embrace the plaid trends of today while also investing in things that will carry you into the seasons ahead.

I know checks or tile prints aren’t technically plaids, but you can use them interchangeably just the same so I’ve taken liberty to include them here for you. This Beaumont Organic scarf is everything you need this fall! It’s large and in charge but lightweight and classic. Go ahead and get two, because when you buy one for a friend, you’re gonna hate yourself for not getting one for yourself!

Speaking of gifts, this faint plaid hat band by GIGI PIP is perfect for your favorite hat wearing friend (or you!). You can use it on so many styles and it’s perfectly neutral for all your fave autumn looks and coffee holding selfies.

Lastly, let’s talk about these VANS because I AM HERE FOR THESE! Amidst the white sneaker trends we’ve been seeing for a couple years now, I love seeing a comfy eclectic patterned sneaker sneak it’s way into people’s closets too! These plaid and cheetah print options will thrive with your solid black looks but also try them with some large windowpane prints like these pants from TORRID too! You don’t have to limit bold prints to just solid color looks. We’ll talk more about that soon!

ACCESSORIES

Whatever you decide to do with plaids this fall, I hope you’re grateful for something you see in the mirror and that you take time to let your clothing choices tell a little bit about what you value and the pieces that make you so valuable to the world. We need you!
