violet
We’ve made it to the final day in this fun little colorful series. Thanks for joining me! Today I’m throwing violet, indigo, and purple into one big beautiful pot. It’s filled to the brim with lush beauty and deep emotion. These colors are magical and mysterious. They evoke creativity, prompt intimacy, and symbolize transformation in all types of art. We know shades of these colors to cover the shoulders of royalty and drape the cross above altars on Sunday.
Sometimes colors are just in our lives for pure enjoyment. Other times they act as doorways into places we want to hold close and treasure forever. These visual cues are keys that unlock memories, emotions, and significance that can be unique to each of us. They are personal and they are powerful.
My mom’s favorite color was purple. When I see purple I think of her immediately. I imagine her many purple shirts, her matching reading glasses, and all her fuzzy purple socks. Somehow I can feel the curve of her neck and the memory of her tight comforting hugs that my body just fit into because it was home. It’s crazy that a color can have that kind of impact, but I’m so glad it does. I’m hoping that kind of power stays with me forever so I never forget what those hugs felt like. Being in a current state of not having had many hugs for approximately four months due to COVID-19, I may just start surrounding myself with as much purple as possible.
When I wear purple I feel surrounded by all the greatest aspects of my mom. I know that the early years of my creativity were influenced by her. I know that my unique magic and mystery was loved and appreciated deeply by her. I remember the powerful impact of having had a mom like mine. I know that I was loved.
